The perfect pink: MUA Luxe Velvet and The Perfect you.

They say it takes on average 7 attempts to take the perfect "selfie". Well I don't know about perfect but I managed to be happy with this self portrait in 6 attempts with the aid of my DSLR (or as I call it "The Fancy Camera I share with my Dad), a remote control, a homemade tripod because mine is broken, & some decent natural lighting.

This look is sort of a variation on theme for me but it's part of an attempt to branch out and become more adventurous again and hopefully as a result become less judgemental of myself. It's a subtle move I'll give you that but I'm so tired of the rut that I'm in with make up and clothes. I'm hoping that by doing this series of make up and outfit self portraits I will be encouraged to branch out, be happier and more confident. Because ultimately, although I don't care about being thinner or prettier. I'm still a girl. And we are trained from a very young age to look for flaws within ourselves and to change them. A small scar on the lip, a round face instead of an oval, a slightly lazy eye. These are the things we need to learn to truly love before we tear ourselves apart.

As for the makeup itself! Things to note are that no matter how good your eyeliner brush (mine is from Zoeva and I love it) it can be quite tricky creating a double flick using only eyeshadow. MAC Carbon is used here but sometimes I really wish I wasn't allergic to normal liners and could get that crisp line I so very much crave! On the lids was a light blend of Carbon & a Barry M Dazzle Dust Yellow. I haven't used dazzle dust as actual eyeshadow in ages and forgot just how nice they are, even if I'm not their target age range anymore.

On the lip I used MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Laquer in Criminal which is a pretty decent dupe of Lime Crime's Velveteen and a bargain at only £3. Most high street/drugstore brands have their own attempts to recreate this super Matte long lasting look but this is my favourite and fits my tight budget perfectly!

Budget Beauty Brushes: are they really worth it?

I know what you're thinking. A second bargain beauty post in a row? Maybe switch it up eh? Ummmm nope. I love my premium makeup items, I really do. But I love finding a bargain beauty buy just as much, if not more.

Today I'm talking brushes. There seems to be an incredible range of brushes out there at the minute. Whether it's high end, mid range, or budget, there is something for everyone and there is usually a dupe (or shall we just call them copies?)
Today I'm looking at budget brushes including one of those infamous copies.

Unbranded EBay Brushes 7 piece set for 5.69

An obvious replica of the Real Techniques Precious Metal brushes and at first glance the only difference is that these don't have RT stamped on the side. The design, the colours, the shapes are exactly the same! I've never used the real Real Techniques ones but I'd have to say if I spent £30 or more on these I'd be hugely disappointed. Having only spent a fiver I'm really chuffed. The…

Am I Disabled?

This article has been going through my head quite a lot recently and I’m feeling a little self indulgent so bear with me.

As a kid I was on the special needs list throughout school and given a classroom assistant to help with my tracheostomy care. I was considered disabled enough to warrant disability benefits right up until I turned 18 when they decided that I wasn’t mentally incapacitated enough and too independent. A panel of bureaucrats sat across the table and said “we can see you are but there’s nothing we can do.” I didn’t tick the right boxes.
I’ve worked since I was old enough and supported myself as much as I could and excluding a few short absences from work I have been successful in that.
Until now.
Now I can’t support myself. I struggle with self care. I’ve had to give up my home and I’ve lost my independence. I’m back to getting surgery’s every 6-8 weeks. They were usually just day cases but the last few have been fairly severe with extended stays (I get to have another …

Battle of the pale bronzers: Benefit Hoola Lite vs Wet 'n Wild Reserve Your Cabana

Have I ever mentioned to you that I am pale?  Well of course I havementioned many times over the history of Faeriwood that I've been pigmentally challenged my whole life and - despite flirting with tanning every now and again -  I wholly embrace the pale. I have, however, always been a bronzing queen when it comes to my makeup. Whether I am using cream products or powders I always have felt healthier with a bit of a glow but I hate the orangey-ness of most bronzing products! It’s a catch-22 when deciding which one is more important.  For years I have been loyal to two products. Nars Multiple for a cream face (read here why I don’t believe in the term contouring for chubby cheeks) and Benefit Hoola for a powder face. Both are quite dark so they are used often but sparingly. This is why I was delighted when two new products designed for pale skin came on to the market.
